What really goes Into Your Body Every Day in India and Why Nobody Is Talking About It Loudly Enough

What really goes Into Your Body Every Day in India and Why Nobody Is Talking About It Loudly Enough

We live in a country that exports medicine to the world. A country where food is not just nutrition but culture, ritual and love. A country where a mother's first instinct when her child falls sick is to reach out for a syrup from the nearest pharmacy.

And yet, right now, in 2026, that syrup might be killing her child.

This is not a conspiracy theory. This is documented, reported, investigated and unfortunately still happening. Every meal you eat, every medicine you take and every sip you drink is part of a system that is quietly breaking down. And most of us are only finding out when it is already too late.

The Cough Syrup That Killed Children

In October 2025, children in Madhya Pradesh started falling sick. Healthy toddlers with common colds rapidly developed acute kidney failure and died. Investigations revealed that at least one of the implicated syrups, Coldrif, produced by Sresan Pharmaceuticals, contained extremely high levels of the industrial solvent diethylene glycol, a toxic chemical that causes acute kidney damage and death in children. Chemistry World

At least 24 children lost their lives. The manufacturer's owner was arrested. Even global health bodies could not stay silent .PubMed Central

What makes this even harder to accept is that it was not the first time. In 2022 and 2023, dozens of children in Uzbekistan, the Gambia and Cameroon died after taking Indian made syrups contaminated with the same toxic chemical. After those incidents India pledged to improve quality controls. The pledge was not enough.Chemistry World

Every parent in India deserves an honest answer to one question. If this happened once and they promised to fix it, why did it happen again?

The Vaccine You Trusted May Not Have Been Real

It gets worse. Health authorities in India issued a serious warning after discovering counterfeit rabies vaccines circulating across the country. The falsified vaccine posed a significant threat to public health due to the possibility of lack of efficacy, harmful components and the risk of treatment failure in preventing rabies, a fatal disease. Australian Government Department of Health

Counterfeit batches of the Abhayrab rabies vaccine had been circulating in India since November 2023. People who received the counterfeit vaccine may not be fully protected against rabies.

People who got bitten by an animal, rushed to a clinic, paid for a vaccine and walked away thinking they were protected were not. That is not a small regulatory failure. That is a fundamental breakdown of the most basic public health promise a country makes to its citizens. Source: Travel Clinics — Falsified Rabies Vaccines India

The Milk You Buy Every Morning

Now let us talk about something even more everyday. Your morning milk.

Milk in India has been found adulterated with detergent, urea, starch and even fully synthetic milk. These adulterants are not just reducing nutritional value. They are linked to acute poisoning, organ toxicity, hormonal disruption and chronic health conditions. Youthincmag

More than a decade after this was first exposed, adulterated milk is still a widespread problem. Cities like Delhi, Mumbai and Noida have seen the rise of fake paneer in markets. In Noida and Greater Noida, 83 percent of paneer samples failed quality tests, with 40 percent deemed unsafe due to harmful chemicals and unidentified substances. Drishti IASEducation Post

Think about that. The paneer you are putting in your child's lunchbox has an 83 percent chance of failing a quality check in some of India's biggest cities.

The Spices in Your Kitchen Are Not Safe Either

Some of the most trusted spice brands in every Indian household have been found carrying a pesticide that scientists classify as cancer causing. Countries like Singapore, Hong Kong and the United States pulled these products off their shelves entirely. India kept selling them. Across the country nearly 1 in 8 spice samples tested failed to meet basic safety standards. The thing flavouring your food every single day may be doing far more than adding taste.News 24 Media

Spices, a cornerstone of Indian cuisine, are increasingly found to contain metanil yellow, Sudan dyes, lead chromate and other carcinogenic colourants.  Centrepsp

The turmeric that your grandmother swears by for immunity. The chilli powder that goes into every meal. The masalas your family has been buying for years. All potentially carrying cancer causing chemicals that you cannot see, smell or taste.

The Bigger Picture — A System That Is Failing You

According to the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India, nearly one in four food samples tested across several states fail to meet quality standards. Between 2020 and 2022, over one lakh samples were analysed nationwide and about 26 percent were found non compliant. Education Post

A 2024 parliamentary standing committee report called it an epidemic of unsafe food that India has failed to fully acknowledge. Centrepsp

This is no longer just about quality. It is about survival. It is commercialized violence when done knowingly. At scale it is a silent assault on public health. Wikipedia

The people responsible for protecting you are understaffed, under resourced and in many cases under pressure not to act. FSSAI faces far fewer inspectors than required to monitor India's massive food market. Conviction rates remain low and penalties often do not deter offenders.  Centrepsp

What You Can Do Right Now

This is not about living in fear. It is about making sharper, more informed choices every single day.

For Food

  • Buy from brands with FSSAI certification and verify the 14 digit code on the packaging.
  • Be suspicious of anything priced significantly below market rate.
  • Test milk at home; detergent laced milk forms foam when shaken.
  • Avoid loose spices from unverified sources.

For Medicines

  • Never buy medicines from unlicensed pharmacies or street vendors.
  • Check batch numbers and expiry dates carefully.
  • If a child's medicine causes unusual symptoms, stop immediately and seek medical help.

For Supplements

  • Choose brands that are transparent about every ingredient and its source.
  • Look for clean label products with no unnecessary fillers or additives.
  • Prefer doctor founded brands that apply medical grade standards to their formulations.

Why We Built The Healthy Codes

We started The Healthy Codes because we experienced this frustration personally. In a country where you genuinely cannot be sure what is in your milk, your spices, your medicines or your supplements, finding something you can fully trust feels almost impossible.

Every product we make is built around one non negotiable standard. If we would not give it to our own families without hesitation, it does not leave our formulation table. Clean ingredients, honest labels, purposeful formulations. No fillers. No shortcuts. No compromises.

Because in India right now, pure is not the default. It is a choice. And it is a choice we made so you do not have to second guess yours.
